Real Madrid: Top 3 performers from 1-0 win over Sevilla

Real Madrid took care of business on the road against Sevilla, defeating the team that was in first place in La Liga to move into a tie for first with Athletic Bilbao.

Benzema scored against Seville

It felt like the sky was falling after Real Madrid’s embarrassing 3-0 loss to PSG in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, but there were signs that Los Blancos would have a big bounce-back performance on Matchday 5 against Sevilla.

Although the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan is one of the most difficult stadiums to play at, Real responded perfectly against former manager Julen Lopetegui. With Sergio Ramos back in the lineup, Real’s defense looked much more composed. A high-pressing game served the midfield well, as they were both less exposed and received much better cover from a less-overworked back four.

The result was a 1-0 win and an impressive clean sheet for Real. They could have scored more than one goal if Eden Hazard, Dani Carvajal, and Gareth Bale were able to convert their chances, but Real have to be happy with gutting out all three points against a rival, especially since Barcelona lost to Granada 2-0 just one night earlier.

Here are the three biggest standout performers from Real Madrid’s win, with a special focus on a defense that more than rose to the occasion.

Raphael Varane

The French center back was under a microscope for this game, because he struggled badly against PSG just a few days earlier. Varane was so bad, in fact, that he was one of the poorest Champions League performers out of everyone in the opening matches. He failed to provide any sort of cover for Dani Carvajal on the right side, made poor decisions on the ball, and generally looked both lost and ineffective without captain Sergio Ramos by his side.

On Sunday, Varane looked like the world-class center back he is. Sevilla’s strikers, whether Luuk de Jong or Chicharito, could do nothing to threaten the 26-year-old. He made zero mistakes at the back end, allowing Thibaut Courtois to finally have a relatively uneventful day between the sticks.

Everyone on defense had a strong performance for Real in this game, but it was Varane who stood out the most. And, yes, he deserves additional credit for rising to the occasion in a tough environment shortly after struggling mightily. Sevilla tried to put a target on Varane’s back, but the World Cup winner handled the pressure with aplomb.

That’s what an elite performance at center back looks like. Statistically, Varane led the team with nine clearances and a pass completion percentage of 91.4%,

Karim Benzema

Coming into this game, Real Madrid knew it would be difficult to score goals against a Sevilla side that had surrendered just one goal in their first four La Liga games to support their standing as the competition’s top team in the standings.

So Real also knew that they would need to count on star striker Karim Benzema to find the breakthrough.
After striking twice against Levante on Matchday 4, Benzema bagged the game’s deciding goal in the 64th minute in the same way he scored his first against Levante. Benzema simply latched on to an inch-perfect cross from Dani Carvajal, catching hold of his header perfectly to place the ball beyond Tomas Vaclik.
The Sevilla keeper had been excellent throughout the game, so Benzema needed to make no mistake with this golden opportunity.
Benzema continues to be Real’s most clinical forward, whereas Hazard and Bale missed good opportunities. The French star continues to put himself in good positions inside the box, providing Carvajal with opportunities to whip in dangerous crosses.
He also had a pair of key passes, putting in hard work for his teammates, as per usual.
Based on the fact that Benzema has five goals in five games to clearly lead the team, there may not be a more important player for Los Blancos than the 31-year-old.

Dani Carvajal

Dani Carvajal came under fire after a poor performance against PSG. He couldn’t handle Angel Di Maria on the left side of PSG’s formation, putting in a well below-average shift defensively. Carvajal was exposed so badly that fans started to wonder if he truly is in a state of decline, as he also made a couple of critical errors in a 3-2 win over Levante despite playing reasonably well overall.
Like Varane, Carvajal had a huge statement game against Sevilla, playing a key role in a much better defensive effort from Los Blancos to finally help maligned goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois register a clean sheet.
Carvajal finished the game with four interceptions, three tackles, and four clearances, putting him in a tie with Varane for the running as the team’s Man of the Match. What may put Carvajal over Varane in terms of performance in this exact game, though, was his vital assist. He started the brilliant passage of play with a cheeky touch and finished it with another perfect cross for Karim Benzema,

Real Madrid president talks to three stars as pressure builds on Zinedine Zidane

Real Madrid president talks to three stars as pressure builds on Zinedine Zidane

Real Madrid supremo Florentino Perez has sought out senior Real Madrid stars as pressure builds on Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman spent lavishly in the summer as he overhauled the squad.

However, results have been erratic in the opening weeks of the season despite the new arrivals.

Real were humiliated by Ligue 1 heavyweights PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Los Blancos lost 3-0 in Paris to Thomas Tuchel’s weakened side.

According to Spanish media outlet Diario Madridista, Perez has now sought counsel with players in the dressing room.

It’s suggested he held talks with Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Karim Benzema.

The club president reportedly told the trio that he has confidence in them - but knows they can do more.
Zidane has the backing of Perez, although relations with the rest of the board are apparently strained.
Speaking after the humiliating result against PSG, Zidane admitted his side weren’t at the races.
"We didn't really ever get going. Here we are all in the same boat,” he explained.

“When we win, we all win. When we lose, we all lose.
“This defeat is hard to take, but we have another game on Sunday [against Seville] and need to focus on that.
"They were superior to us in everything they did, and in intensity, which annoys me the most.
“They were good and created chances, but what worries me is that we played without intensity.
"We knew they'd pressure us. But we didn't really get properly into the game at any stage.
“Intensity is the most important thing on the pitch. You can have your worst game, but if you play with intensity, put your foot in, win challenges, you can win the game - but we didn't. "
Real travel to Andalusia tomorrow and lock horns with Julen Lopetegui’s Seville.
Lopetegui was axed by Real last year after just 14 games in the hot seat.

Odegaard now has the chance to prove what he cannot at Real Madrid

  • Real Sociedad gives Martin Odegaard the chance to prove what he cannot at Real Madrid

Martin Odegaard
Martin Odegaard
four years ago, Martin Odegaard made the decision to leave Norway for Spain.
Having impressed the global footballing community at the age of just 16,
helping Stromgodset impress in his native top-flight after making his debut a year earlier, the creative midfielder had drawn the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs. Liverpool invited the teenager to take a tour of their facilities, while Bayern Munich, Arsenal ,Ajax, Manchester United and Manchester City did the same, before the decision was taken to choose the all white of Real Madrid.

A season with the club's B team provided the first platform for Los Blancos to understand what kind of talent they had in their grasp and to understand where would be best to help Odegaard take his next steps towards development into a top-level professional. Loan spells at Heerenveen and Vitesse saw him progress each campaign, climaxing in a 2018-19 Eredivisie season which saw the Norway international involved in 19 goals (8 goals, 11 assists).

Having taken the Dutch srepping stone, a division which can nurture technically gifred players in a competitive environment, the time was right to return to his true proving ground  Spain. only there can the former protégé showcase exactly what he would be capable of in a Real Madrid shirt in a year's time.

Is San Sebastian the best place for his development?

Real Sociedad were the club who chose to put faith in the long-term ‘wonderkid’. Now 20, Odegaard has a strong amount of experience under his belt for his age and will be playing this season under Imanol Alguacil, the man promoted from his new club's B team to take the reins after the sacking of Asier Garitano in December 2018. La Liga's opening weekend, the Txuri-urdin used eight under-23 players in their 1-1 draw against Valencia.

Odegaard (20), Robin Le Normand (22), Ander Barrenetxea (17), Mikel Merino (23), Aihen Munoz (22), Mikel Oyarzabal (22), Igor Zubeldia (22) and Alexander Isak (19) got on the field against Los Che, as Alguacil leads a forward-thinking and youth-focused project towards the next level. Much is made of Athletic Bilbao’s Basque-only selection policy, but their close rivals also have an impressive conveyor belt of talented youngsters who get opportunities to prove their worth in Primera. Odegaard is just another one of his peers, possessing talent but needing the track record to justify his coach (at his parent club or otherwise) giving him a further chance to develop at Spain’s top table.

Former Barcelona youngster Roberto Navarro (17) is set to leave Monaco after moving to the French club just last year, but despite his Basque heritage it is likely that the talented Spain U17 international will snub Athletic - a club with a proven pathway to La Liga football. There can’t be a more glowing reference for a youth network in the country at present than turning down an academy such as Athletic’s Lezama in favor of a switch to San Sebastian.

Where will Odegaard be used?

Since the departure of Sergio Canales to Real Betis, Real Sociedad have lacked a creative difference-maker in their midfield three. The likes of Asier Illarramendi and Igor Zubeldia are great in holding roles, while the likes of Mikel Merino and David Zurutuza are quite versatile and forward thinking, but still do not have that silky verve that Canales could offer.

Adnan Januzaj was relied upon as one of the club’s more hard-to-track, drifting creative presences from the right-hand side of midfield, while Oyarzabal offered a more direct goalscoring threat from the left. The door was very much open for a midfielder to step into Alguacil’s squad and steer the tempo and angles of the game, spraying the ball wide or between the lines, looking to offer a vertical way to hit lone striker Willian Jose.

Odegaard can dribble at pace or pick a pass, while playing in the center of a midfield three demands a level of defensive awareness too. Able to play neatly and quickly in tight spaces, as well as having the agility, center of gravity and close control to wriggle away from pressure, he has the skill set required to prove useful against teams that sit deep and ask to be picked apart - while his first La Liga goal against Real Mallorca last weekend highlighted that he also has the pace and foresight to get into the penalty area and finish with aplomb.

From Real Madrid’s perspective, they are getting a chance to see the 20-year-old facing relevant opposition, in a roughly similar role that could be up for grabs in the not-so-distant future at the Santiago Bernabeu. Zinedine Zidane does currently lack a more adventurous presence in his midfield three, leaving Karim Benzema plenty to do in terms of dropping in and linking up with the rest of his front three. Everything that Odegaard has done thus far in a Real Sociedad shirt suggests that he would fit that mold well.

Will Odegaard play for Real Madrid in the future?

While Los Blancos may have ushered Zidane back to try and get back to winning ways, which can be seen as something of a step back, opportunities should present themselves in the Spanish capital before long. James Rodriguez and Isco cannot be considered as key first-team contributors as it stands, given their stop-start form and rarely getting a consistent run of games owing to technical decisions, distrust from past coaches or injuries, while Luka Modric is rapidly approaching his 34th birthday.

Although Zidane has been hesitant to put too much trust in young players in important roles unless absolutely necessary, a fact that Dani Ceballos can attest to, there is a realistic hole that could appear in Real Madrid’s midfield. Should Ceballos continue to impress during the 2019-20 season at Arsenal, or should the club’s long-term interest in Paul Pogba bear fruit in the summer of 2020, Odegaard will inevitably fall down the pecking order.

The Norwegian has the technical ability and intelligence to thrive in La Liga and is making huge efforts to perfect his Spanish, another important factor to allow him to settle long-term in the country. There is a more than a realistic chance that he will be spat out by Real Madrid once he reaches his five-year milestone at the club, meaning that now is the time to put himself on the market. He is more than talented enough to generate a lot of interest. This will be the season that Odegaard comes of age and proves that he is ready to fly the roost with ambition.

Former Manchester United boss Hose Mourinho wants Real Madrid return

Jose Mourinho has set his sights on a return to Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss has been out of work since last December and recently joined sky sports' punditry team.

The Los Blancos are continuing to stumble under Zinedine Zidane, following up their opening day win over Celta Vigo with a disappointing draw against Valladolid last weekend at  Bernabeu .

Zidane returned to a club in turmoil in March, but is yet to sufficiently steady the ship despite a host of big summer signings.
Spanish outlet AS claim Mourinho is watching developments at Real Madrid closely and believes there could be an opportunity for him to replace Zidane.

There was hardly a dull moment during Mourinho's three-year spell at Real, but the Portuguese only managed to win la liga once while he was in charge.

The 56 year old has been inundated with offers to return to management, but Mourinho is set to snub all proposals in the hope he could get the call from Perez

Mourinho will re-evaluate his future in January if Real do not come knocking.
Mourinho has already insisted he will return to work in the dug-out , despite a difficult tenure at United.

'i have some time to think, to rethink, to analyse and what i feel is exactly that 'Ze' is full of fire , ' he said in July.

' My friends tell me : "enjoy your time enjoy your July enjoy what you never had". Honestly, i can't enjoy. I am not happy enough to enjoy.

' I miss my football, I have the fire. The most difficult thing for me is to say "no" to the possibilities I had to work.

'I have to be patient and wait for the right one and the right one is one at the dimension of what I am as a manager.

' I have to be patient  and that is the most difficult thing because I had the impulse during this period so many times: "yes , I go".

' No I cannot go. I have to wait exactly for the right one.'

Real Madrid drew with Real Valladolid

Real Madrid 1-1 Real Valladolid

Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane once again surprised the world by not only starting Gareth Bale, but giving James Rodriguez his first start game for the Los Blancos in over two years.
Madrid controlled the first half and both James and Bale came closest to breaking the deadlock. Though, the team's failure to capitalize on their first half opportunities would come back to haunt them.
Valladolid became more efficient on the counter in the second half. Zidane's push for a goal saw him sacrifice Isco for Jovic, ultimately earning a goal, but also sacrificing control and balance. Sergei Guardiola would score a heartbreking goal at the last minute of the game to equalize and spoil Madrid's night. Dropping at the Bernabeu is becoming an all too common occurrence.
